Technology in education

Technology is changing the way students learn but also the way professors teach! And this is great news. Times change and technology is everywhere, putting this reality to the benefit of education is a must and the benefits from it are real. Technology can bring many benefits to education such as using these mobile devices that usually distract your students to a better good, by improving participation and interaction with your audience. One great benefit is for instance, the fact that technology enables very effective  audience response systems  in classrooms. Audience response systems are a great way of increasing the level of participation and interaction with your audience and students tend to enjoy the class more and remember the content better. Wooclap  is an awesome and easy tool for that. It’s a great interactive tool used on all devices; smartphones, tablets and computers. All you need is the link to the website and you can turn presentations, classes, meet...

The National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme.

Image
The suite of programmes under the NSIP focuses on ensuring a more equitable distribution of resources to vulnerable populations, including children, youth and women. The NHGSFP delivers school feeding to young children with a specific focus on increasing school enrollment, reducing the incidence of malnutrition (especially among the poor and those ordinarily unable to eat a meal-a-day), empowering community women as cooks and supporting small farmers that help stimulate economic growth. Over 8.5 Million Primary 1-3 pupils are being fed daily in over 47, 000 schools across the country. This Programme has improved the quality of life of these young pupils who did not have access to such nutritious meals before now. This scheme is very laudable; for previously, many pupils in public schools in various states of the Federation do not eat to go to school because of the poverty of their parents and guardians. Some of these pupils have become physically weak, sickly and stunted. Incidenc...

Why A PhD is so important

Disclaime rs  ON THE evening before All Saints' Day in 1517, Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of a church in Wittenberg. In those days a thesis was simply a position one wanted to argue. Luther, an Augustinian friar, asserted that Christians could not buy their way to heaven. Today a doctoral thesis is both an idea and an account of a period of original research. A PhD is perhaps the most important degree in the world. It is the most valuable asset that an aspiring academician can have.  PhD research will help to improve your abilities to understand and solve problems, increase your confidence, make yourself a better communicator and gain skills that may lead to a better job, even in many fields apart from academics. It is a foundation that can lead to the publishing of papers, awarding of grants and other kinds of recognition by your peers. Importantly, it is a UGC requirement for teachers in universities to be promoted to associate professor.  T...

Why is facilities important in schools

A growing body of research has found that school facilities can have a profound impact on both teacher and student outcomes. For teachers, the quality of their teaching environment can affect recruitment, retention, commitment and effort. For students, school facilities affect health, behavior, engagement, learning and growth in achievement.  A 2014 report for the Victorian Department of Education and Training  looked into the drivers of student performance, noting that student socio-economic status, independent schools and teacher quality/satisfaction were all major contributors. While these are important, this research left out one key factor – a school’s facilities. Even though, for most parents, a school’s facilities are not usually the highest priority when choosing a school, there are multiple studies that indicate the quality of a school’s physical resources plays a large role in determining student success. So, how important are a school’s facilities? H...

Why engineering important

The most important thing to the prosperity and security of the nation during an  international , knowledge-driven economy can be its leadership in  technology  and innovation. Only the best engineering education and educators can create next-generation Stephen  Hawkings . The true importance of engineering  education  can be measured by the changes we have seen globally. The world has faced indefinite challenges, energy crisis, development, climatic and other problems which needed some effective methods of solution. Engineers secure the faith of growing economy. Engineering plays such an important role because it is the way that we humans are able to use the rules of the world to achieve things. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology teach us how the  universe  works, it gives us all the instructions we need as to how things interact. Engineering is the way of taking the instructions and using them to make the things that nature didn’t give us....

lecturers involved in sexual harassment – NUC tells VCs

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has charged Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities to publish the names of lecturers found wanting over allegations of sexual harassment of their students. The Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, gave this charge at the Redeemer’s University in Ede, Osun, on Monday. He said this in a keynote address he presented at the 33rd annual conference of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU). The V-C said that since he took over the leadership of the NUC two years ago, he and his team had been working on reforms to improve the university education in the country. He said that the reforms had been working and helping to reduce the ratio of corruption in the university system. Rasheed, however, said that the major challenge at the moment had been allegations of sexual harassment by lecturers against their students. “Our major crisis now is sexual harassment.Whether we like it or not, I want to...

Back to school for Thailand's elderly

Reuters) - Wearing crisp red-and-white uniforms, a group of 60-year-olds pile into a bus, smiling broadly as they make their way to a school in Ayutthaya, a province in Thailand. For this group, and others across the country, going back to school offers a way to fight loneliness at a time when changing demographics mean more elderly people are living alone. "I've been looking forward to every Wednesday, when I go to school, dress up as a school student and meet friends. We get to talk and laugh together," said Somjit Teeraroj, a 77-year-old widow who is a student at the school for the elderly in Ayutthaya's Chiang Rak Noi subdistrict. ADVERTISEMENT After the death of her husband of 40 years, with her children visiting occasionally, Somjit said it was the school that helped her recover from her loss.
